A Parisian street scene unfolds beneath an unlikely visitor: a submarine drifting silently across the sky above the rooftops. Café awnings ripple in red and blue-and-white stripes, a Métro entrance opens into the crowd, and dozens of figures move through their day — waiters, women with market baskets, a girl in a wide-brimmed hat, a man wheeling his bicycle home.

The submarine is a recurring vessel in Ealy Mays's visual language, tracing back to his youth, when he was drawn to naval service but turned away for medical reasons. It resurfaces throughout his work as a kind of floating archive, carrying fragments of culture that don't officially belong together. Here, hovering over Paris, it becomes a way of saying that a city is never just its streets and façades — it's rich, layered, containing multitudes above and below the surface, all at once.
