French Dude Series
He is a recurring figure across Ealy Mays's work — the beret, the striped Breton shirt, the red neckerchief, the baguette tucked under one arm like a walking stick. Here he strolls with his loyal companion, a French Bulldog with, by all appearances, opinions of his own.
Behind them, the city announces itself in shorthand: a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower, a Métro entrance, a Morris column still carrying the ghost of a theatre poster. This is Paris reduced to its most recognizable silhouettes — the way a caricature works, funny because it's true.
The French Dude is part gentle mockery, part affection — a character Mays has returned to again and again, sometimes centre stage, sometimes glimpsed only as a poster within another painting. He is less a portrait of one man than a portrait of an idea: the Frenchman as the world likes to imagine him, beret and all.
